Biography
I am Professor of Colorectal Surgery at University of Birmingham and honorary consultant colorectal surgeon at University Hospitals Birmingham with special interest in minimally invasive colorectal cancer therapy including 'keyhole surgery', Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery or TEM and advanced endoscopic therapy. I lead a pioneering international research programme developing non-operative treatment for rectal cancer enabling selected patients to avoid radical surgery. I am Chief investigator for both the Cancer Research UK TREC and STAR TREC studies that evaluate these new rectal preserving therapies across the UK and Europe.
I lead the D3B [Drugs, Devices, Diagnostics and Biomarkers] clinical research team at University of Birmingham delivering a wide range of innovative research studies across all medical and surgical disciplines. I am also Deputy Director for Birmingham's Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit with over 200 staff.
Nationally I am co-director for RCS (Eng) RADAR [Robotics and Digital Surgery] Initiative and lead the MASTERY study, developing digitally enhanced robotic surgery across the UK.
Previously I trained in Newcastle, Christie Hospital Manchester, John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford (Lecturer in Surgery, University of Oxford), St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre Melbourne (CSSANZ fellow).
