Biography
Richard Baker offers a general surgical and coloproctology service.
He has a wide general surgical practice particularly in lower gastrointestinal disease , abdominal symptoms and perianal diseases.
His main areas of interest are advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques in the treatment of colonic and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He offers a state of the art specialist proctology service including the management of haemorrhoids, fissure and fistula.
He also offers robotic rectal surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS)
He also offers a comprehensive approach to the management of abdominal and groin hernias, mainly using laparoscopic techniques.
Mr Baker did his undergraduate studies at the University of Leeds medical school and completed his basic surgical training in Hull.
He gained his higher degree (MD) after a period of postgraduate research at the University of Hull researching the genetic origins of colorectal cancer and the impact of laparoscopic surgery on its management.
Mr Baker did his higher surgical training in the Yorkshire region as well as a senior fellowship at the world renowned specialist centre for coloproctology St Marks Hospital in London.
He is an experienced endoscopist and one of only a handful of surgeons who is nationally accredited as a screening colonoscopist allowing him to perform bowel cancer screening colonoscopy. He is the clinical lead for the screening programme in Leeds.
He lives in Leeds with his wife and two children and outside of medicine, enjoys live music and cycling.
