Biography
Arend Merrie MBChB, PhD, FRACS
Arend trained in General Surgery in New Zealand gaining his Fellowship and a PhD on colorectal cancer in 2001. Following this he completed a post fellowship training programme in Colorectal Surgery in Auckland and Oxford.
He has particular interest and expertise in minimally invasive approaches to colorectal surgery including; laparoscopic surgery, single site laparoscopic surgery, TAMIS and taTME and minimally invasive haemorrhoid treatments such as HAL-RAR. His clinical interests are in colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease with a special interest in the genetics of colorectal cancer. In addition he is accredited in endoanal ultrasound and has an interest in the management of anorectal and pelvic floor disorders.
Arend is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Arend works as a Colorectal Surgeon at Auckland Hospital and in private practice at the Auckland Colorectal Centre and is an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland.
