The Committee of Nurses and Allied Healthcare Professionals Group of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland would like to announce the change of our name to Association of Coloproctology Nurses.

After two exciting days in Oxford working on our new strategy in conjunction with surgical and allied healthcare professional colleagues, the committee members of the Nurses and Allied Health Professionals Group (NAHPG) of the ACPGBI proposed a change of name for the group. Subsequently, the NAHPG membership was invited to offer feedback on the proposed name change, with the majority in support. Therefore, from 22 February 2016 the group will be named Association of Coloproctology Nurses of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPN of ACPGBI for short). The name change is intended to promote the group nationally and internationally and to make the association with the ACPGBI more explicit. In removing allied health professionals from the group name, the intention is not to distance our relationship with other professionals working in coloproctology but to capture the group’s essential nursing focus. We continue to welcome and encourage collaboration with other healthcare professionals who are working in coloproctology and to learn from each other through their membership and cooperation with the group.

Next step

This is the start of a new strategic focus for the group, as we develop the online support and information for our members and focus on the need for robust, evidence-based education for clinicians working in coloproctology. To this end, an exciting all-day programme has been developed for our 2016 annual meeting in Edinburgh on 4-6 July. The Nurses Symposium of the Association of Coloproctology Nurses will take place on 5th July 2016, and include a range of presentations highlighting exciting service and clinical developments within a range of colorectal nursing settings. We will also take this opportunity to introduce some of our planned activities for 2016-17 and to provide opportunities for networking.
