Clinical Fellow for National Bowel Cancer Audit
26 May 2017
The National Bowel Cancer Audit is seeking an ambitious clinical fellow who will be part of a multidisciplinary team working in partnership with senior members of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland.
The candidate will support the further development of the Audit, data analysis, and reporting of its findings and policy implications. The candidate will be expected to have a high output of academic papers, to attend national and international conferences and to use their work as the basis for an MD/PhD thesis.
The Audit evaluates the quality of care received by patients with Bowel cancer in England and Wales. Its aim is to assess the organisation of cancer services as well as the diagnosis and staging process and the outcomes of treatment.
The Audit has historically focused on bowel cancer patients who are treated surgically. The successful candidate will help with a continuing aim to widen the scope of the Audit (including all bowel cancer patients, not only those treated surgically) and to extend its time horizon (assessing long-term patient outcomes up to five years after diagnosis)
The post will be based in The Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a joint unit of The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Its remit is to carry out national audits, develop audit methodologies and produce evidence on clinical and cost-effectiveness of surgical procedures.
The Audit is funded by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership. It is carried out by the Clinical Effectiveness Unit in partnership with the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland, and NHS Digital.
The candidate should have clinical experience in a relevant discipline (surgery, gastroenterology, oncology) and have passed a Membership/ Fellowship exam of a relevant Royal College. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and good organisational abilities are essential. Research experience is an advantage but further training in research methods and statistical analysis will be provided.
The post is offered full-time for 2 years. There will be no clinical duties or on-call commitments. The salary will be between £34,746 and £41,979 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
Informal enquiries regarding this post should be directed to Dr Kate Walker, Assistant Professor in Medical Statistics (
kate.walker@lshtm.ac.uk); Mr Jim Hill, Colorectal Surgeon (
James.Hill@cmft.nhs.uk); or Ms Abigail Vallance, current Clinical Fellow for the National Bowel Cancer Audit (
