A Wellcome Trust-funded project based at the University of Roehampton. The project explores the place of emotion in surgical practice from 1800-present.

Surgery and Emotion is an interdisciplinary, four-year project exploring the emotional landscape of surgery from 1800 to the present. The events will give the public a chance to interact 1:1 with surgeons, and our aim is to humanize and de-mystify surgical practice. We want to move away from stereotypes of the detached surgeon, and open up conversations about the range of emotions involved in surgical care. Five events have been planned, across the UK. The first will be in London at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, organised in association with the Hunterian Museum. It will take place from 6-9pm on Tuesday 2 July. (future dates/ locations will be announced in due course.) The events are intended to be very informal - they'll run along the lines of a speed-dating format, with attendees spending a few minutes speaking to each surgeon and rotating around the room. At the end of the event, we'll come together as a group over refreshments to reflect on what we've learned. The events will involve a small group of around 30 participants (15 surgeons and 15 members of the public). Asking any surgeons interested in taking part in the events (in London or elsewhere) or send an email at surgeryandemotion@roehampton.ac.uk by the end of May. Please provide your name name, position, where you work, and why you'd like to be involved. We're interested in hearing from trainees, currently practising and recently retired surgeons. We want a really diverse group, who'd be happy chatting to the public about their work. No preparation is required and we can reimburse local travel expenses.
