Mersey Chapter Meeting Report 30th July 2020

The ACPGBI Mersey chapter held a further virtual chapter meeting via Zoom on 30th July 2020. The Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which was recently formed by the amalgamation of the Royal Liverpool and Aintree University Hospitals, hosted the meeting.
Shakil Ahmed, consultant colorectal surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital chaired the meeting. An introduction to the meeting was given by the ACPGBI president, Professor Steve Brown. Paul Rooney, consultant colorectal surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital presented on the topic of “Ileoanal pouch – dead or alive”, giving an overview of pouch surgery and was followed by Ufuk Gur, also a consultant colorectal surgeon from the Royal Liverpool Hospital, who gave an update on pelvic floor surgery. The meeting then covered topics of advanced malignancy. John Kirwan, consultant gynaecological surgeon and oncologist from the Liverpool Womens’ NHS Foundation Trust, spoke about the role of the regional complex pelvic exenteration MDT. Paul Skaife, consultant colorectal surgeon at Aintree University Hospital presented on the role of radical peritonectomy in advanced ovarian cancer. Paul O’Toole, consultant gastroenterologist and advanced endoscopist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, presented data on the management of Significant Polyp & Early Colorectal Cancer (SPECC) lesions. The chair of the ACPGBI Early Years Consultant Network (EYCN), Yianna Panagiotopoulou, gave an overview of the role of the EYCN in order to introduce the chapter to the newly formed group. EYCN has the aim to provide support for consultants in their first five years of practice with support taking the form of mentoring, opportunities within the profession and career progression, as well as advice on other aspects of consultant practice including job-planning, handling complaints, inquests, litigation etc.
