It is envisaged that suitable applicants will be at, or near, the end of higher surgical training, or recently appointed to a substantive post.

Although no previous publishing experience is expected, the successful candidate will have scientific curiosity, write well and have a facility for constructive criticism. The position is open to all surgical specialties.

Successful applicants will be fully involved in the publication process of BJS and BJS Open with the opportunity to contribute to all discussions pertaining to strategy and policy.

The role will require:

  • Attending monthly editorial meetings either remotely or in-person in European cities
  • Assisting editors in the handling of papers, from submission to publication
  • Supporting activity on BJS and BJS Open social media (X, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.)
  • Assisting with scientific writing courses
  • Completing a research project relating to surgical publishing

To apply, please submit an abridged CV (2 pages maximum), which includes a publication list of only your top 10 publications (plus the number of total original full-length publications).

Your covering letter (1 page maximum) should explain your interest in the position. Your application should be submitted in a single PDF to Alison Cherrie, Head of Publishing, at alison@bjsacademy.com, and should be received no later than 30th April 2025.

Applicants will be informed of the decision in late June 2025. Please note your application will not proceed if these guidelines are not followed exactly.
