me+™ recovery provides research based and peer reviewed training for stoma nurses and medical teams to safely and competently provide individualised rehabilitation following stoma surgery- immediately post-op to encourage movement (supporting enhanced recovery) and with a focus on strengthening the abdominal core muscles to help reduce the risk of parastomal hernia. The programme also provides advice to support patients' future physical activity and exercise and discusses the NHS physical activity guidelines to promote activity and reduce co-morbidities associated with lack of activity. It is a 2 day course comprising of 12 hours of taught theory and practical skills in ensuring patients undertake the movements/exercises safely and effectively. 7 events for 2018 23/24 January 13/14 March 20/21 March 9/10 May 11/12 July 10/11 October 6/7 November To support the course 3 patient booklets have been produced - phase 1, 2 & 3 and the movements/exercises are also available as video clips. Visit the Convatec website Key learning aims To be familiar with published guidelines on physical activity for the general population and cancer patients. Understand the importance of physical activity in the recovery process after stoma surgery and be able to give safe and appropriate research based advice, with an understanding of how to reduce the risk of parastomal hernia. Feel capable to teach phase 1 me+™ recovery movments to patients and e able to use modifications/progressions where appropriate to support patients continuing phase 2 and 3 of the programme following discharge.
