Supporting the development of medical technologies in the fields of colorectal, vascular and hepatopancreaticobiliary (liver, gall bladder and pancreas/HPB) surgery to improve healthcare and quality of life for patients.
The NIHR Surgical MedTech Co-operative (MIC) are hosting their first National Meeting which is an exciting opportunity to network with clinicians, academics, charities, funders, and patient groups.
The NIHR Surgical MedTech Co-operative is a centre of expertise for the development of technologies in the area of colorectal, vascular and hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive therapies for colorectal, vascular and HPB disease, translating scientific innovation in engineering, nanotechnology and biosensing into clinical applications. Our National Meeting brings together clinicians, academics, scientists, industry partners, patients and the public to work together to advance patient care by accelerating new science and technologies into patient benefit.
Some of our successes include:
- Commercialisation of an intra-abdominal platform (IAP) for laparoscopic surgery.
- Demonstrating proof-of-concept for a novel photodetector system for at home bowel cancer screening
- Clinical evaluation of a remote, near-continuous, patient vital signs monitoring system (including health economics)
- Clinical validation of fluorescence molecular probes for image-guided surgery
- Cost-effectiveness evaluation of a near-infrared perfusion angiography for preventing anastomotic leak following bowel cancer surgery
- Technology development for regenerative cell therapy to promote wound healing following bowel surgery
- Technology development of a ultra-low-cost, ingestible endoscopic capsule to diagnose early gastric cancer
This year’s theme, “
Surgery for Tomorrow's NHS”, is motivated by the need to utilise and apply the latest technologies to improve surgical care and patient outcomes in the NHS.
Confirmed speakers include
Dr Chris Pomfret Technical Adviser - Research Commissioning, NICE
Mark Miodownik Professor of Materials & Society UCL Mechanical Engineering
Stuart MacMillan, Scan4Safety Programme Lead, LTHT
