Biography
I am a consultant colorectal surgeon at University Hospital Southampton. I completed my higher surgical training in the Wessex Deanery. I then spent 2 years at internationally renowned units in Sydney gaining further subspecialist skills; first at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in minimally invasive colorectal surgery, advanced fistula treatment, inflammatory bowel disease surgery and endorectal ultrasound. My second year was spent at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, a national referral centre for cytoreductive surgery, sarcoma and pelvic exenteration. I returned to Southampton to take up a post as a colorectal surgeon with a focus on cancer treatment and research.
I was a Croydon Colorectal Research Fellow for 2 great years. During this time I researched the staging and outcomes of sigmoid colon cancer with Professor Gina Brown and Professor Tekkis at the Royal Marsden; I succesfully defended my thesis and was awarded my PhD in 2021.
During my PhD, I set up the national NICE FIT Study with Mr Muti Abulafi at Croydon University Hospital that recruited 9822 patients at 50 sites in England. I am the proud recipient of the prestigious 2020 ACPGBI BJS and ASGBI Moynihan Prizes for this work. I have supervised research by Miss Georgina Hicks, which was awarded the John of Arderne Medal from the Royal Society of Medicine Coloproctology Section in 2021.
Besides research, my other main interest is in training and teaching surgery. I have a Master's degree in Surgical Education.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 3 young kids, try to keep my 10k and half-marathon times respectable, and pursue my passion for eating and cooking pizza.
