Biography
I have been a Consultant Surgeon at Barnet Hospital, now the Royal Free NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust, for 16 years and have performed over
800 colorectal resections during this time. I audit my own results and have an elective colorectal mortality of 0.76% and an anastomotic leak rate of 2.77%.
I set up new colorectal services at Barnet Hospital including laparoscopic
colorectal surgery, extralevator abdominoperineal excisions for rectal cancer (training under Prof. Torbjorn Holm of Sweden) , TEMS procedures for early rectal cancers and benign rectal tumours, laparoscopic rectopexy for rectal prolapse and robotic surgery for rectal cancer and rectal prolapse, HALO procedure for haemorrhoids, training other consultant surgeons in the UK, and complete mesocolic excision for right-sided colonic cancer (training under Professor Frank Pfeffer from Norway).
Robotic colorectal surgery is in its infancy in the UK and there are only a small number of Hospitals in the UK offering this service.
Along with a colleague, I produced a DVD to show other surgeons how to perform robotic ventral mesh rectopexy. I have attended the Advanced Colorectal Robotic Course in Italy (November 2014) and joined the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association. Recently, I set up and chair the Wellington Hospital GI Cancer multidisciplinary meetings and am the Clinical Lead for Colorectal Surgical Services.
I have published several papers in peer-reviewed journals, a chapter in a book and I am a clinical reviewer for articles for the journals: Colorectal Diseases and Journal of Surgical Simulation, for which I am on the Editorial Board.
