Biography
Malcolm has been appointed as an Associate Professor in colorectal surgery and prehabilitation medicine at the University of Southampton in 2021. He is a consultant colorectal surgeon specialising in complex abdominal cancers and advanced pelvic malignancy at University Hospital Southampton. He completed a PhD in 2015 investigating the role of perioperative risk stratification, prehabilitation and mitochondrial energetics in locally advanced rectal cancer patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy.
He aims to improve outcomes in patients undergoing major cancer surgery utilising personalised risk stratification and tailored multimodal prehabilitation interventions. His research interests include interrogating the pathophysiological mechanisms of changing cancer biology, fitness, nutrition, and body composition with cancer therapies, whilst using prehabilitation interventions to improve physiological resilience and cancer outcomes especially in advanced cancers.
Malcolm is a core member of the NIHR Global Health Research Unit with an interest in global surgery and cancer outcomes, and is a senior investigator for the Fit-4 Consortium based within the NIHR Biomedical Reserch Centre in Southampton.
Malcolm was awarded the Association of Surgeons Great Britain and Ireland Moynihan Travelling Fellow for 2020-2021. He was also awarded the Royal College of Surgeons, England, Minimally Invasive and Maximally Invasive (MIMICC) fellowship in Complex and Robotic colorectal cancer surgery at St. Mark’s Hospital, London (2020-2021).
He is the sub-speciality surgical lead for the Wessex CRN and is the co-chair of the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit programme for the South East & Central selection committee.
