Biography
David McArthur is a consultant general surgeon at The Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust. He qualified in 1998 at the University of Birmingham with Honours in Surgery. Having completed house-jobs in the Midlands he became a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Birmingham. Following senior house officer jobs he undertook a period of research into the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer and submitted a thesis for which he was awarded an MD by the University of Warwick.
He undertook registrar training in general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands, before securing an Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland Fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at Leeds. During this time he gained considerable experience of advanced laparoscopic colonic and rectal surgery, including laparoscopic pouch procedures; additionally, he developed a specialist interest in the surgical management of patients with advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. He has published widely on a variety of colorectal and general surgical conditions, and has presented at numerous international and national meetings.
On completion of his training, David McArthur took up post as Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in July 2011. He has had a key role in furthering the provision of laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Heartlands Hospital and setting up a service for patients with locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. He is on the teaching faculty of a number of postgraduate courses and has a continuing interest in clinical research.
Mr McArthur has specialist interests in the use of laparoscopic surgery to treat colorectal conditions, including cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He offers multi-disciplinary management of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction, including rectal prolapse, obstructive defaecation and rectocele, and aims to treat these conditions using minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic ventral rectopexy, where possible. He offers treatment for a full range of benign anorectal conditions, including piles, anal fissure, anal fistula and pilonidal sinus. He offers modern surgical management techniques for the treatment of piles, including stapled haemorrhoidectomy (PPH) and THD (haemorrhoidal artery ligation).
Mr McArthur is a fully trained, JAG-accredited colonoscopist, offering both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.
Mr McArthur also offers surgery for a full range of general surgery conditions, including hernias (inguinal, umbilical, epigastric, incisional, parastomal), which are treated laparoscopically where appropriate, and the removal of lumps and bumps. He performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy for the treatment of patients with gallstones.
