Biography
I qualified in Cologne, Germany, in 1988. I received my surgical training rotating through the leading units of the West Midlands including Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Good Hope Hospital and Heartlands Hospital, and was appointed at Good Hope Hospital as Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in 1999.
Since 1999 I have developed the Endorectal Ultrasound Service at Good Hope Hospital, to stage benign and malignant lesions of the rectum. I am the lead surgeon performing Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery, training other surgeons in the technique. I am the lead clinician for early rectal cancer for the Birmingham Cancer Network.
Since 2002 I have developed laparoscopic colorectal surgery. I am mentoring other colorectal surgeons in the technique. In addition, I have extensive experience in open colorectal procedures.
Within HEFT, I am part of the team promoting and implementing Enhanced Recovery after surgery, shortening length of stay after major surgery. Combined with laparoscopic surgery, hospital stays as short as 3 - 4 days can be achieved.
