The Multidisciplinary Clinical Committee has now published guidance on producing clinical guidelines and consensus statements for ACPGBI specifically but these will also be of interest to other guidance commissioning organisations.

ACPGBI's Multidisciplinary Clinical Committee (MCC) commissions clinical guidelines on the management of various colorectal disorders in order to improve the standard of practice of colorectal surgery and guide clinicians. The committee has produced its own guidance which outlines the process.

What motivates the production of new clinical guidelines and how they are commissioned.

How members of the group are selected, its multi-disciplinary nature, and conflicts of interest. Also how a proposal is drafted and getting approval for the project.

Non-commissioned guidelines

If a proposal comes from an individual outside the MCC, once approved, it is treated identically to other proposals.

Development of clinical guidelines

Stakeholders need to be involved early on and their input seriously considered. The group should develop specific questions to be addressed relating to the optimal management of the condition in question. Research should be structured and guidance on this is given, together with how to do an evidence search and how to analyse that evidence.

How to go about drafting recommendations and what should be included.

Review of clinical guidelines prior to publication

The guidelines should be submitted to the editor of Colorectal Disease for peer review and potential publication. If successful the guidance will be published in the journal and on this website.

Reviewing and updating the guidelines

Guidelines will be reviewed between three and seven years after they have been published, unless there is a major change in clinical practice.
