Dukes’ Session 4 – 5pm Tuesday 2nd July 2013. ACPGBI Conference 2013. BT Convention Centre, Liverpool. This year’s Dukes’ Session is set to build on the success of last years lively consultant debate, in which John Hartley narrowly defeated Karen Nugent on the topic of subspecialisation. This year, Professor Robin Phillips (St Mark’s Hospital, London) will propose the motion: “A formal period of research is necessary in modern surgical training” This will be opposed by Mr John Abercrombie (Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham). Current ISCP guidelines state that trainees applying for CCT must be able to demonstrate skills in the box below and traditionally surgical trainees have taken 2 or more out of programme to complete a research MD/PhD. Can these skills be gained within surgical training time? Is time out of programme beneficial or detrimental for surgical training? Do trainees need higher degrees? Are patients better cared for by surgeons who have undertaken formal research? Whether this formal period of research is necessary in modern surgical training is a matter for debate… and so we will. We look forward to hearing these respected, experienced consultants share their views on a contentious topic. Examples and descriptors for CCT

• Demonstrates critical appraisal skills in relation to the published literature
• Demonstrates ability to apply for appropriate ethical research approval
• Demonstrates knowledge of research organisation and funding sources
• Demonstrates ability to write a scientific paper
• Leads in a departmental or other local journal club
• Contributes to the development of local or national clinical guidelines or protocols
• Organises or leads a departmental audit meeting
• Leads a complete clinical audit cycle including development of conclusions, the changes needed for improvement, implementation of findings and re-audit to assess the effectiveness of the changes
• Seeks opportunity to visit other departments and learn from other professionals
